We have all kinds of treats in this smoothie, and one of them, maca, reduces hot flashes! It can also help us lower anxiety, depression, insomnia, and increase bone density and sexual function! Maca is an adaptogen, which means that it helps modulate the body’s response to stress of all kinds. It can gently aid in the body’s production of estrogen and can lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Maca is somewhat of an acquired taste, but once you fall in love, you’ll want to add maca to everything.
Another awesome ingredient, flaxseed, is full of protein, fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, which can help regulate our menstrual cycle, keep the vagina lubricated, and also reduce our hot flashes. We teach that getting 3-4 Tbsps. of flax per day can dramatically cut hot flashes as well.
A third ingredient, hemp, contains more magnesium than all other seeds. Since most of us in the US are magnesium deficient, this is a big deal. Magnesium supports relaxation. High stress contributes to depleted magnesium and depleted magnesium is associated with chronic inflammation and disrupted sleep. We can also increase our magnesium by taking Epsom salt baths, which are super relaxing and make a great way to prepare our body for sleep.
